After more than 30 years of teaching and a lifetime of memory keeping, I thought retirement on the stunning Oregon Coast would be everything I dreamed of. Instead, I found myself creating in quiet isolation with my crafty friends still back in Tucson, my online communities feeling hollow and impersonal. I had boxes overflowing with photos, journals, and stories, but no one to share them with. The fear of judgment and the ache of not truly belonging kept me hiding behind my projects, waiting for a community that felt safe enough to show up in fully.

So I stopped waiting and built it myself. I created Paper & Purpose — a woman-owned, Latina-owned small business dedicated to giving scrapbookers, junk journalers, and memory planners a genuinely safe, inclusive home. Through the Junk Journal Society and The P&P Collective, I built spaces where weekly Crafty Hour Zoom sessions, hands-on prompts, collaborative projects, and real conversations replaced the noise of generic online spaces. What I found inside changed everything: I learned to share my imperfect pages without fear, rediscovered a consistent creative rhythm, and traded isolation for friendships built on a shared love of storytelling.

Today, I don't create alone and you don't have to either. Memory keeping became a true source of joy again, and my only regret is not finding this kind of community sooner.
